Lime increases the time it takes to produce hot water and reduces the amount of hot water available
Year after year, limescale is deposited on the heating elements, which are responsible for heating the temperature of the cold drinking water from the tap. If the water is "hard" (see below), the limescale can even form a veritable layer around the heating elements. Since lime is a poor conductor of heat, it slows down heat transfer, thus increasing the time it takes to heat the cold water: less warm water is available to the occupants. In addition, limescale depositing on the walls and bottom of the water heater reduces the amount of hot water available. It can even partially clog the pipe coming out of the boiler, causing less hot water to flow out of the taps...
